Nigerian Afrobeat sensation, Wizkid has spoken on how he met Tems and the build up to them recoding the smash hit song, Essence.
On September 15, GQ Magazine published an interview article on Wizkid, where he was described as the “King of Afro-pop.”
During the lengthy chat, the singer said he cannot remember how he and Tems met but he recalls bringing her out during one of his shows.
He explained that when time reached for them to each record their verses on Essence, Tems came to his hotel and they got to work.
The Grammy-winning artiste also disclosed that he is working on a new album.
In his words; “I am working on a new album, but I never like to be, like, in a rush. Sometimes it takes me a year, two years, to make an album. I always record in terms of albums, not just songs. I like to make music that way, because it gives you a sense of direction.
“Well, in the next album, I’m just trying to enjoy myself with the music now, because of the reception from the fans for my last album. I just keep evolving with the sound.”
On Working with Tems, Big Wiz said; “You know, I’ve known Tems… I can’t even actually remember how we met, but I know I brought her out for one of my shows in Lagos. We had talked about working and I went back home to record.
“When I record at home, it’s like I have a crazy situation. I’ll be in a room with like 8, 10 producers, everyone’s got their rooms and we’re just making music. She came through to the hotel and we laid down the idea. It was just effortless. Just lay down the melodies, and she didn’t even think anything of it. She felt like we had to do another record, but I already knew we had magic.”
